There's so much more I want to say and many, many thanx to so many who helped us all make thru a bit of a 'trying' weekend dealing with Mother Nature. But for now, I'll stay with just this question about dates. I chose the first weekend in May as it doesn't conflict with many other events and festivals. But we've had to endure rain twice now so one or possibly 2 weekends later seems to be a better choice. I've asked this before but would like everyone's feedback about preferences and possible conflicting dates of other 'happenings'.

Also, we've been considering making check in Wednesday so we can have a full day of workshops Thursday.
2010 weekend choices are;
May 5 thru 9
May 12 thru 16

I went to Fire Drums for the first time this year and I thought it was pretty cool! I'm hoping that some of the drummers I met there: Galen and his brother(?), Howard and anyone else can find time to come by my camp (Fantasy Funhouse on A near 8:30 - we'll have a stage and sound system) for some jamming and let me know where they'll be camping so I can join in their fun!

LOST: Drum chair with my name on it.

Hey everyone,

just wanted to say a quick couple of things, get them off my mind. Enjoyed Firedrums this year, would have enjoyed it more without the mud and rain. It's Scottish weather novelty quickly wore off.

It was a shame I didn't get to chat to more people, chris and shireen, rif, chains and like everyone... I didn't get a proper chance to talk to all the 'old schoolers' Sorry you guys. I barely even realised ryhmo was there. Crappy. Sorry everyone. I really would have enjoyed talking more to people but for some reason the rain kinda made that not happen too. It's weird.

I'm glad people enoyed my workshops, thanks everyone. They went rather well this year. I will put up some workshops notes at some point, and chad has some footage from the contact workshop so you can have a reminder and aid for later practise. [Practise practise practise...] ;p

Thanks to skye and everyone with rubber boots particularly noel, who helped when they were tired and cold and being rained on. Good effort you guys. You were awesome.

I particularly enjoyed taking anna maltese class on wushu broadsword. I felt even more hardcore doing it in the rain and mud. And loki's workshop on shoulder conditioning was super interesting.

Anyway, gotta go find some food to eat.

Hope I'll be back for firedrums 2010...

Every year we try new things in hopes of making things better. The only way we can make the right choices is to hear from as many of you as possible. So please take a moment to tell us what worked and what didn't. This isn't intended to be a discussion but rather just constructive feedback.
I'll begin with a few of my own;
1) No more tiered tickets, , one price only.
2) Be more clear about "volunteers" from the beginning. Sorry, but this was one of those mid stream decisions I didn't clearly communicate from the beginning.
3) move the dates out at least one week to hopefully get past the rains.
4) your turn, , lets hear it,,,,,,,,

My camera bounced out of my pocket Saturday night (3 am ish) while I was running to get my keys to unlock my car where I had left an interior light on. Did anyone find it, or see it? It's a handheld little Canon Powershot, 870 I think. It was in a little black zip pouch that fits in your pocket. It had lots of little dance videos on it. Please contact me if you have any info. Thank you to all the gate/greeters who helped greet many many peeps to this amazing event!

as you know it was a great place to hang out with fire, tarps and fun folks........ getting excited every time a CAR came around the bend...... the Mr. Fish spanks, Miss Fish lips lisps, the megaphones, the snacks people brought and of course the never ending rockstars to keep us awake for our shifts............... and all the laughs and giggles.......... throughout the 96 hour shift!!!

I couldnt have done it without all of u and the rangers!!

Contact Fire Sword??!? Double Meteor? WOW WOW WOW!!

Suffice to say that my mind has been blown. Rovo's double meteor workshop made me pee my pants (figuratively). This art is just beginning. . . i loved how throughout the workshop he kept saying "and there's this _weird_ move" and "this move is really _weird_" and just kept showing us new stuff . . . and i'm flabbergasted and am making double meteors asap.

i also got some vids of that which i'll send over to chris which he'll hopefully put up on his youtube or some such. . . we'll see.

also. . . any have the info for the guy who was super good at contact staff and was doing it all with a huge flaming counter weighted sword? email or something would be much appreciated as i'd love to find out how he made it. . .

had so much fun yall! thank you so so so much and see you next year!

I want to thank all the people that made this event possible. i couldn't eve begin to name the long list of people, though i will shout out to Sky for holding this vision all these years.

Thank you all for bringing all you had to this muddy event. I was inspired, again and again, looking around and seeing you, my fellow flowsters, playing, sharing, teaching, learning, evolving and being the amazing artists you each are individually. I'm grateful to play among you and honored to share space with you.

also, a special shout out to riff for sharing the last burn with me in the muddy rain this morning. it was the perfect end to my fiery night.

May you all be warmer, dryer, less muddy and equally inspired. :)

Memories and thanx ,

Though we had to work a bit harder for this one, I still saw a lot of smiling faces. We're moving the dates out one or two weeks to the 2nd or 3rd weekend of May so we should never again have to deal with the rain and mud. Though, as many people noted, in some ways hangin in the lodge and huddling up under tarps and in the stage hut at the play area brought many people closer together. This was definitely an example of how trying times can bring out the best.
My personal list of thanks is very long and I'm always hesitant to begin for fear of leaving someone out, but I'll try to touch on what I can for now.
,
Noel of course, you're at the top of the list. No one has promoted and helped spread tha werd about FireDrums more than you. Thanx for all the coordinating help and putting up with my ramblings and helping to keep me on track.
,
Ian, thanks for jumpin on with Noel and coordinating all the finances and business.
,
Chad, huge thanx for setting up and continuing to help with the web site and tickets. This was way beyond what anyone could ever hope for.

Flint and all the Rangers, as always and even more so in trying times, you guys rocked it! Bacchus, thanx for the grilled bacon and cheese when I was too tired to even open a power bar. Creech, you da man with tha big 4 by, helping get people out of tha mud,,,,, that was uber awesome!!!!!

Elecktra Bomb and all the Greeters, , every time I came by, you guys were always livening things up like the Greeters station WAS the party!

Chelsea and the First Aid crew, , again, THANKFULLY, we didn't have need for many 'body repairs'. But you guys were always there and ready.

Terra, George, Paul, Geoff, Crispy and all the kitchen crew, , how totally and completely amazed, happy and grateful I and everyone is for the awesome meals. I constantly heard so many compliments on the wonderful food, , and for once, I actually got to try some it.

Greg, Sam and the FireSafety posse, the fuel station ran safely and was always clean. You guys were always around and smilin and kept everything running smoothly.

P, Steve, Geoff, Yogi, and all the drummers, , this was the best year ever for the drummers. Thank you for helping build the momentum. Vatra and Dub, thanx for helping spread tha werd and getting us even more awesome drummers.

Sean, Adam, Robert, Flint, Lester, Geoff, Steve, more who's names I can't remember and everyone who helped set up the decor, the dome, the tarps and the fires, , you all helped in ways that made things more comfortable for so many. For everyone who helped with the tarps, a special thanx for climbing trees and sloshin thru the mud and the rain to set them up.

Scorch, Jaz and everyone who participated with vending, thank you for hangin in with us in the rain and having all your wares out there for everyone to try. The Vendors area was awesome. Thanx Ray and crew for all the chai tea and cookies!!!!!

To the beautiful soul who's name I can't remember just now for that back rub at the stage hut. I was about to collapse when these magical hands massaged and revitalized me to keep going.

I want to thank all of you for making this a very important event to all.

To the vendors, thank you for being there and setting up a great little area for all the awesome toys, clothing, and other items.

To the teachers, I have missed taking any workshops while there, from what I heard from every one is that you did a stellar job. The shear depth and breadth of classes is amazing and highly inspiring.

To the kitchen staff, you folks are amazing. You cooked, fed, and cleaned up for hundreds of people a day with yummy, nourishing food.

To fire safety and fire watch, I tip my hat. You're continued sanity kept us safe from harm and the fires burning.

To the greeters' and gate crew, you are worthy of the, "Keeping the Party going for 96 Hours," award. If you ever bored/tired/cold/wet you could always head up the hill for where the real action was. CAR!

To the first aid / boo-boo booth crew, I hope we never have to use you in your fullest capacity. I'm always glad your there and hoping never have to call you in need.

To my Rangers, a huge thank you. We hated asking you to put out any campfires, but never had an issue pulling out vehicles from the mud on Sunday. We hope you enjoyed the 200 grilled cheese sandwiches on Saturday night. We found out the not only do the funny hats we wear keep the sun out of our eyes, but they help keep the rain off as well.

And to Noel and Sky, a big thanks for keeping it going. These two did a lot of things behind the scenes not only up until the event, but also a lot of unglamorous jobs: erecting huge tarp structures in the rain, unclogging toilets, and doing so while being every where at once.

Fire Poi on Planes - technically not allowed, so.....now what?

Hey everyone,

I decided to play it safe, so I called the airline and then TSA - the Transportation Security Administration - and I was told that anything that has come in contact with combustibles will be removed from luggage if found.

I've traveled with fire poi in the past, and had no problems, but I feel like security is tighter lately. I'd really rather not give my fire poi to a bunch of security people.

Thoughts, experiences, suggestions? My one thought now is to either borrow some, or buy a pair at Firedrums, then pass them on to someone before I leave. I know that most of the time I'll be using practice poi anyway, so maybe borrowing them won't be such a big deal? I've never gone before, so I have no way of knowing!

Burning Passion will not be making it to FireDrums... Tickets for Sale.

Due to the worst set of circumstances, Burning Passion was hit over and over by bad luck prior to preparing for FireDrums. LONG story short... our veggie oil RV is in dire shape and needs some more mechanic love (after 3 tows and a lot of wasted time).
I feel that my patience and sanity has been tested to the extreme (48 hours of no sleep so far) trying to get this motor home of ours in working shape the past few days. I can't help but feel responsible for the 5 other people who were going to travel with us and 2 we were going to pick up at the air port in Sacremento by not seeing these circumstances as a possibility.
This has been an incredible test of character. Wanting something so incredibly bad (FIREDRUMS) and accepting no matter how hard we try we can not get the RV working in time. This situation has also completely financially drained me. When life throws these challenges at someone, they have the choice of either overcoming it or breaking down.
I'm going to use this time I would have been at FireDrums to finish our business website. It is nearly getting there, feel free to check it out so far at http://www.burningpassion.com

Power Source and Fuel

Hey Everyone.

Wondering if there is going to be accessible power sources at the event for attendees? My Camcorder has rechargeable batteries and I will also want to be able to upload my videos to my laptop as my camcorder can only store one hour of video.

Also will be coming out very late on Thursday and won't be able to pick up any Fuel to contribute as I'm flying in from Austin. Would be more than happy to kick in some $$$ for Fuel if someone wouldn't mind picking up a few extra gallons for me.

What food are you bringing?

So I just wanted to get a general idea of what people are bringing for communal food goodness; I'm sure whatever is brought will be eaten, but it'd be nice to make sure that there's a spread of stuff and not just tons of tons of jam and peanut butter and no bread.

That said, I'm bringing as much bread as I can. Lots and lots and lots. Hopefully i can fill up my friend's trunk with bready goodness.

Question from a newbie - I've seen a couple of posts which suggest that we don't camp where we park, so I'm wondering how far we have to carry our camping gear from parking lot to campsite? Fire Drums 2009 Photography

As I've done for every past Fire Drums other than the very first one, I'll be out taking photos at Fire Drums 2009. You can see the results from past years on the Fire Drums website or at http://naturalturn.fotki.com/bm/beach/ .

I'll be taking fire photos starting at about 7:15pm on Thursday and Friday evening, and going for a couple hours or so. This is a good time to take photos and corresponds to a lull in the crowds at Fire Drums, with most folks out eating dinner, so we can take photos without getting in the way or distracting dancers in the main circle with flashes. I'll be using portable flash/lightboxes and will be located either along the main fire play area or at the amphitheatre. I might do it on Saturday and at other times as well, but that depends on the state of the crowds, and I want to get some fire dancing in myself.

As always, you'll get the high-resolution, edited images.

Hey folks. I am teaching the intro-intermediate staff class Fri morning at 9:45. I am expecting somewhere between 60-90 students, which is way to many for one teacher. I am also preparing for at least three major differences in levels. So I am asking for help. I want to be ready to have three different groups going simultaneously; intro traditional staff, intro contact, intermediate contact. If you feel like you can lead any two of these (not at the same time), and wouldn't mind helping me teach, then please send me an email at chad at freedomthrufire.com . I have a general syllabus for each of these, but you would be welcome to teach what you are familiar with. We also may be teaching 80 people all intro to traditional staff or intro to contact. It will depend entirely on who shows and what level they are at. Either way, I will need help with this many folks.

I will be bringing my lap-toppy for Thursday and filling in for her, but I do not have the tools to reap tunes via i-pods lest I do it one song at a time. Love you but....you know.

"PRE" Community meals volunteers

Every year we try to bring more to each gathering. The community meals have been put together on the spot and made with food items brought and donated by the participants and also some we purchased. Last year Terra and Paul stepped in and made some awesome meals. This year they and George have offered to step it up and actually coordinate all the meals. Many people have already signed up to assist in the kitchen and lodge. Terra and crew have put together a menu of items and Firedrums will again purchase a portion of the items needed. Terra will have a list of additional items needed and will post that in the next few days. Also,Terra lives in San Francisco and will be needing some assistance handling some of the shopping. If anyone is in the SF area and can help out sometime over the next week, please send a message to;

San Francisco Airport Ride Share

Cabin or Hotel near Firedrums

Anyone know if there is any cheap hotel Accomodations near Firedrums? Coming out on Business that week and don't want to lug all my camping gear from Austin if I don't have to. I did a search a only came up with one place. Merrybrook lodge. I doubt I'll do much other than grab a few hours sleep and shower there but would be nice to have a placed booked in case of bad weather etc.

I will be aiming to capture the essence of what Firedrums means to me, sharing the love!

My little cam will be running almost constantly with video and picture taking. Last year I sorted though 40+ gigabytes of media to form the videos I released. That being said, I just wanted to throw this out-

If you see me with a camera out and you don't want to be in a possible public video, let me know! If you don't want to be recorded at all because it's a little hard to bare your soul with a camera rolling - also let me know. I will not be offended in the slightest.

Naturally, I will never post anything publicly that I know is a private matter or incriminating. Other media will be posted privately to tribe only.

There were cases last year where I really wanted footage of people (Poki, Noel, Ian, other Vulcanites, I'm looking at you) and because of all the crazy stuff going on I totally failed to get around to it before the end of the weekend. If you have a little something you think is worth sharing, step up to me! While I do showcase JEDI masters, in last year's videos I also chose to showcase those personal moments of beautiful self expression. If you want a recording or pictures I will get the files to you *cough* once I get the Wildfire footage from last year back to some of them... heheheh, been a little busy.

Also, it probably won't be like last year, when I had the finished video out a few weeks after Firedrums ended - But I promise it won't take half a year either. I hope I can capture some of these fond memories for future years and our brothers and sisters who cannot make Firedrums.

Disclaimer: I am terrible with names, but have a great memory for faces. You may have to remind me again, even though I remember you from before :] Likewise, I also forgive the people who thought I was Yuta.
