This is the scoop. My girl and I are into BM early, on the L3K crew. We would like to fly into Oakland, and possibly come by the Vulcan (miss you guys already!). We have found a ride in on Sunday, but this ride leaves early too, like before the burn. So, is anyone needing some company for the return trip? There will be the two of us, and minimal gear as we will probably send most of our stuff with our theme camp (KOI Pond).
So that's what's up, anyone know of a ride out and/or possibly be able to put us up for a day or two? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys, much love!

I'm offering up my house for free for the time I'm gone, if anyone wants to live in a quiet place in the oakland hills with a deck and a lil forresty back yard...I'm happy to fill up the fridge/pantry with anything you want, I'll take care of any living expenses you may incur...I'd just like someone to be staying there to watch lola... She can be left alone, if you have work or want to go out, there is a doggy door to the yard so she can let herself out if youre not there... she just needs to be walked and fed and loved and such...

People you met, relationships, favorite memories. Kind of like a FireDrums 'blog' page. Wether you've only been once or every time.
Here is the Sponsor Letter that you can send out to friends and family to request donations for the Make a Wish foundation…

REQUEST FOR SPONSORSHIP
On Sunday January 20, I am participating in a dance-a-thon called Wishing Well @ Woodley Park to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for this worthwhile charity that has helped so many children. Please visit wishingwellwoodleypark.blogspot.com/ for full details on this event.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has given hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions. From humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, Make-A-Wish Foundation has evolved into an organization that grants a child’s wish in the U.S. every 41 minutes. Visit their website http://www.wish.org for more info.

I know we all have good hearts and that we believe in helping worthwhile causes and that is why I am asking you to sponsor me for this event. Sponsors make a donation by check or online and I am committed to dance for the number of hours you choose. For example, if you sponsor me to dance for four hours at $5 per hour, that would be a $20 donation to Make-A-Wish. I will then dance for four straight hours to fulfill my commitment to you.

You can also make a flat sponsorship. All sponsor contributions should be made as a check or money order made directly to the “Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles”. or via pay pal at http://wishingwell2.blogspot.com

Hey. I'm looking for someone who lives in Reno and will let me use their garden hose to fill a ~50 gallon barrel with water, late at night on July 3rd. It's about as much water as you'd use to take a bath.

I'm part of a Bay Area fire art group called Interpretive Arson (interpretivearson.com). Our most well-known project is Dance Dance Immolation. We're bringing another big fire toy, called 2pir, out to the playa for the 4th. We use a water-bath style tank heating system, which needs a bunch of water, and I'm trying to figure out how to avoid hauling that 500lbs of liquid over the mountains.

Can you help us? If so, message me here, or drop me an email: ian@sonic.net. If you'll be out on the 4th, you should come hang out at our camp. It'll be awesome. We'll feed you warm Tecate and you can play with the big fun motion-sensing fire toy.

Thanks!

But, since we popped the cork on this tool at the last FD, and there were, like, 30 people singing the tune and asking how to get one, I thought I'd try to tell them all at once. The Fire Skip-It, or Burn-It as we're calling it, is now for sale. I was going to hold off until after Burning Man, but people are so excited about it, we stepped up the prototype schedule. I'm only announcing this to the FD folks, so you have first opportunity to swing by and get one early. Be the first kid on your block with the fire version of your favorite kitsch toy... :o)

More to come of Rovo, Ronan, and Olive, and maybe we'll see after that. I'm backlogged on sending out footage to people.

I realized right after I started rendering I forgot to shoutouts to Arashi, Musashii, and Poje. Well hell, here it is then. There's still boatloads of beautiful faces I have committed to memory with no names to back them up.

Firedrums was an island in a sea of recent turbulence inundating my life. Following the footsteps of my wrapping up of uni in Utah and my move out here to the East Bay, and in the midst of job searching, while right afterwards hanging out with an old friend who has had a resurgence of Leukemia, finding out my Mum back in Chicago has cancer, and attempting to plan my summer, let alone my future...

I'm sorry if I wasn't 100% present at Firedrums and afterwards, I know I was prone to unexpected timing and not being able to hang out with people I'd hoped to spend more time with, while being my usual loopy self. The videos I edited are also, by large, rushed and I'm still calmly meditating over a panic at how things are going, well let's just say life sucks.

However, I am indubitably grateful for having met you all. This is just a small token of gratitude, piecing together clips and recordings and snapshots of Firedrums. These are some of the times that were fun, when I could forget about how shit was going down and mull over how crazy life is. These are some of the memories I want to remember. These are the people that I was inspired by.

There were plenty more. Even though I recorded over 3 hours of Firedrums stuffs, it wasn't enough for such a great time. I'm just sorry I wasn't able to showcase 300+ faces.

Quite a few people told me I smile a lot when I spin... heheh, I think most of you already know that joyous feeling though.

Thanks for sharing it,
~K

So HLGBCS means High, Low, Good, Bane, Crush, Surprise.

You put the things that stood out about firedrums in those categories. (And yeah, Crush is usually a person or five.)

So mine is:

High:
Wow, the place, is amazing, redwood forest, lake, cabins on hills... soooo good.
So much fire spinning = awesome.
Time to practise, great workshops, amazing people, good food, almost the whole thing was a high.
Spinning with Noel, and making his night. :D I've been an organizer, so getting an organiser to have some fun is a nice thing for me.
Loads of new movement ideas coming out.
Talking to Rif and Rich about stuffs.
Interviewing people.

Low:
Missing workshops, missing stuff. Not enough time in the day for everything and everyone.
It only being 3 days long. :( It should be 2 weeks.
My new contact staff bending on the 4th burn. But it's gone to a new home that'll take care of it I think.

Good:
No ticks got me, nothing significant bit me.
Finding the Lodge toilets, and that they always had toilet paper. ZOMG! Win.
Meeting so many people that said: I learned off your website! :D Overwhelming.
The drumming stopping and some tunes coming on.... after hours and hours and days of drumming, it was a relief.
The bass drummer and the flame cannon doing a call and response thing. Next time some dueling banjos style shenanigan is in order I think. :D

Bane:
Cold cold cold nights, and a tiny cramped cot thing in a tent to sleep on.
Dust and smoke and a sore throat not helping it.
Not doing enough spinning.

Crush:
Yuta for being a crazy filming pixie, and even filming the boys pushing the portapotties. Sooo cute.

Surprise:
The amazing location.
The incredibly selection of people that just kept turning up. There was some hot shit talent on thursday night, but by saturday it had exploded.
Brandon - where did he come from?
So many female double staffers and contact staffers = WIN!

I hope that gives people the idea... it's your turn next!!

Sunday eve we left the beautiful redwoods and headed back to the Vulcan in Oakland. I thought I'd spend the nite and head back south in the morning. Next thing I remember, it's days later and I'm still there. We had nice dinners with lotz of kool friends, , went into SF to Golden Gate Park spin jam, , and afterwards went out for another fun dinner down Haight St somewhere and non stop spin play day and nite. Huge thanx to Prisna and Sean for offering up their incredibly awesome place for Sage and I to crash. HUGE THANX as well to all the Vulcan posse for turning it into a spin hostel for the week. Then slowly people began to head out. Some flew down and a few of us loaded into a mini van and headed down for the post gathering workshops in LA.

I got back to 603 emails which took me days to go thru. Had to restrain myself from checkin in here cause I knew I'd be another day reading and responding to a gazillion posts. But finally I made it thru the emails and now thru all the many wonderful threads. I've never read so many words that have made me smile and sometimes even cry with happiness.

This was the first time I've left feeling we have finally grown to be what I'd always hoped and envisioned FireDrums to be. I have never been a part of so much wonderful selfless giving and sharing. There were so many who volunteered and shared their time, knowledge and experience, and never were there any egos flyin. We had workshops the weekend prior at the Vulcan and in SF, then the gathering and today we're just finishing up the last of the LA workshops. One of the most amazing facets of all has been to see how so many have been inspired by others. Watching world renowned artists so eager to learn from others and share without any hesitance were the most beautiful moments ever.

And there were so many who volunteered to make it all flow relatively smoothly thru out the weekend. Some who didn't even make it, but still supported with their time and energy regardless. MIKE had other plans but still spent time drawing and up loading us a much better map and helped find us a firewood supplier, and PAULA was still organizing the first aid "Booboo Booth" from out at sea, knowing she wouldn't be able to attend. Howzat for dedication!!!!!!

There are so many I want to thank, and while I'm hesitant to start for worry I'll leave someone out, I still have to give those that my fried brain can remember at the moment a shout. I'll 'try' to be brief, but there are so many;

NOEL YEE !!!!!!!!!!! Most of you guyz have no idea how hard hard he (and not forgetting SILENCE as well) worked to organize all those workshops. Noel and I have been communicating many hours every week for the past months to try to make this everything it could possibly be. And on top of all that, he wrangled dozens of people from airports and organized workshops pre gathering as well. The Vulcan was buzzin like NASA headquarters just before a space shuttle flight. One morning I woke early and looked down from the kitchen to see a floor full of sleeping bodies who had been up spinning all nite. It was an endless flowing of intense concentration and smiling faces. Soooo beautiful to have witnessed!!!!!

ANKE !!!!!!!! How kool is our web site?!?!?!?!?! It took months of emails and phone calls and communication with many others to create a really professional site. We were slow to get some things up, but we were starting from scratch and wanted to make it right. We'll still be adding more in the future and it will get even better. But for now, I could not be happier to have this truly professional site. http://www.firedrums.org

ELECTOBOMB !!!!!!! Elecktra was all over it months ahead, coordinating all the greeters and checking everyone in at the gathering and (along with PAULA and SHIHO helped wrangle a kick ass Ranger crew. Really can't offer enough thanx for you energy Elecktra!

speakin of Rangers,,
FLINT and ALL THE RANGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys rocked!!!!!!!!!! Everywhere I went (and I was everywhere as much as I had energy to be) there you guys were. Constantly lookin out for everyone. PAULA, ELECKTRA and SHIHO get atta girrrlzzzzzz for givin a shout out and helping wrangle us the most awesome Ranger posse ever FLINT and crew worked all the way till the end cleaning up the kitchen, play area and fire pits and makin moop sweaps everywhere.

RACHEL, GREG, SEAN, SONYA !!!!!!!!! These guys were constantly cruizin around watchin over the play area and workin to keep it safe. And great job with the fuel depot and spin out area. That's always an obvious point of concern and these guys had a big job to keep it safe. Much respect and appreciation!!1

PAULA, REAL GIRL, STEVE, HOWARD, KOYOTE, SPECIAL, and too many more who's names I'm spacin on at the moment, !!!!!!!!!!!!!! All yall were so amazing to hang out and be sure we were always ready with first aid when needed. And thankfully we didn't need much. The sayin "could not be happier" could not be more apropos!

P, PAUL, REID, MICHAEL, DUB and ALL the DRUMMERS !!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for keeping it pumpin. We know it can be a lot of work, and there were times when you guyz were beat, but kept up tha beats for everyone to keep spinnin and dancin to.
We will have a dedicated dance floor right in front of you guyz next year.

TERRA, PAUL, AILEEN, FIRE GROOVE, ALISDAIR, KC and everyone who jumped on the community meals, thanx for keeping us fed, fat n happy. I know this was a challenge and not well organized, but you guyz made it happen and helped us stay well nourished.

ZAN, WALDEMAR, FIRE GROOVE and everyone who helped document the weekend, I know that was a lot of work and we're gonna have a lot of really awesome videos and photos to remember this epic weekend forever.

TRICK CONCEPTS , and all the VENDORS !!!!!!!! "SCORCH" did a kick ass job coordinating vendors and JAZ jumped in to set up and help make Vendors Village a huge success. So many people got to see and try gear that they'd otherwise have very limited exposure to.

ADAM and STACIA, the chill area and decor was beautiful. It was so kool to look back thru a sea of fires and drums and see the uber awesome back drop you guys arranged.

LEAH and DnA, thanks for lending the music. It was really appreciated by many.

And special thanx to AMBER, SIZZLE, KRISPY, SAGE, PRISNA, MARIA (and many others I'll think of once I hit the send tab) for helping and supporting this and in the past.

As I said, I'm still tryin to remember what went down when and where and who was there helping out. There were many, , too many to remember and I know I wasn't always there to witness everyone who helped. But I am very thankful and feel very blessed to have spent this weekend with all of you.
YOU ROCK MY WORLD, MY LIFE, MY SOUL!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

The dedication ceremony will be on Saturday, May 17th and we are looking for at least 8 drummers to interact with the piece to get it moving at the dedication ceremony.

The short version:
$60 for quality camping, drums and fire all night long, classes with people who are tops in their field, old-growth forest, hot showers, fed twice a day. 1100 people in this tribe, why weren't 1100 people at the event? This was a complete steal, you can't get a better weekend for the money, especially if you're a fire performer.

The LONG version
This is a personal review of the Fire Drums (5?) event. Your experience may vary.

The ride - This isn't a rave. Yeah, the last 100 feet are dirt roads, but they're well maintained dirt roads. Pavement right up to the end.
I took the 152 off the 5 from LA. So glad i did. After the cattle stench of the central valley, the 152 made for nice balance. Plus, I happened to stop just outside of Gilroy at a place called Casa De Fruta. Awesome! fruit, nuts candy, carousel, that place rocked. But I digress. Drop by if you go next year.
Gas prices sucked. But there's no way to arrange that with Dubya.

The Grounds - a little spread out. I love the old-growth forest. It totally felt like Michigan (the elevation-cold helped a bit too). Dark, though, VERY dark. Thank goodness that I had my lighter with a flashlight on the other end. Hmm, if you're like me, the "campground" part didn't really sink in. Yup, it's a reserve for Boy Scouts: 2 cabins that sleep 32 people, a lodge with all sorts of Boy Scouts paraphernalia community wash basins, showers, a lake, a pool, and lots of places to hike. Quite a bit of up and down too, especially if you go to the lodge a lot.

The food - Yeah, I know, when you get omnivorous cooks, they have to be specifically requested to do a "vegetarian" dish and it's usually abysmal. But the same can be said of Vegan cooks. No meat. Good thing I had a couple of sandwiches from the Casa. If you -need- meat, best to bring it yourself. But if you're a starvin hippie that forgot to stop and get food along the way (or only had sandwiches and fruit), free eats with plenty of variety is a wonderful thing.

The talent - okay, yes, LOTS of newbies getting their first lessons. It's like a low hum. But think a moment, who's teaching these people? The top talents from all over. Noel, Ueda, Rif, Bunch of freaky jugglers from SF, even a couple big guys teaching fire breathing. :) With a much less hectic time table and essentially just one place to be at night, there's much more opportunity to rub elbows with the folks you wish you could meet. Heck Mike (ICON) and I functionally doubled our lifetime chatting average.
But the more I see fire performances, the less often I find myself impressed with them. Interesting that my annual average of "gasps" should happen in a single weekend.

The Vending - Okay, so, this was the first time, ever, that I vended Bearclaw. I feel a bit dirty. But I will admit that I feel a lot less dirty than if I'd done it at a rave. Since FD is populated entirely by fire spinners (and drummers), there's scant little chance of some e-tard buying a fire tool on a whim. Plus I got a chance to get some responses to stuff I've been meaning to add to the site. But more importantly, I got to talk NAFAA stuff with a bunch of other venders. I know some folks objected, but I think they were ultimately wrong in their premonitions (I was told to keep the price of my bottled water below $5). :oP

In retrospect, having nothing but tool vendors did make it so that nobody got much more than gas money back. Someone selling flashlights could have cleaned up there...

The Spin Jam - Every night: drums, dancers, and a zillion bonfires all in one big circle about the size of Center Camp. Three spotters for 12 or more people on deck seemed like things were a little light. I understand that things ran different from last year, and the duvy pile ran light quickly, but this was the first crack in the system. It seems that, organizationally speaking, the folks running the show work on a dysfunctional committee model. One person sets up safety, or first aid, or whatever, and someone else counters them later. For example, I suggested some kind of screen or wall in front of the dip station to eliminate the possibility of a line-of-sight shot from the spin area into the fuel. After three of us putting it together, it was removed. Not just taken down, but removed completely. Very strange. Whatever. Anyway, some kind of direct hierarchy would be preferable.

- the fuel area - fuel stored in a metal cabinet, a rack set up for tools, a spin out area that kept it off the ground, and a lit dipping station. Aside from the line-of sight issue and the occasional person spinning between the crowd and the dipping station, it worked pretty well.
- the spin zone - circled in bonfires and pretty much a flat dirt area, it got both dusty and smokey. Just no way of getting away from either. But no better place to spin either.

9 out of 10 overall. i kinda missed having a sound system, but little ones abounded and we didn't have to shout all the time. Not quite as much post-event dust to deal with as Burningman. And a shorter drive (though, no casinos along the way). A little work on the organizational structure will trim this down to a "lean mean burnin machine."

Sean- Thanks for the staff and doubles class. I realized that there was some very simple technique that I had never thought of. A few of the things you taught had an immediate impact into my staff technique.

FireGroove (Lester)- Your double staff class totally rocked. I spent much of the weekend trying to perfect my isolations and anti-spins.

Brandon- Thank you for the incredible advanced hooping class. I particularly liked the combo move that you taught and would have loved to picked your brain for more. I also got good insight on some ways to improve my technique on some moves that I already knew.

Zan- Your eliptical flower poi class hurt my brain, but in a good way. Thank you for breaking it down so clearly and being so patient with those of us who had to have multiple explanations.

Bliss (Double staff) - Thank you for your wonderful energy. Thank you for stretching us, my poor achey body really needed it at that point. Thank you for being concerned first and foremost with how to integrate dance into the movement. I loved the combos and tried many of them out on Saturday night. I also got a ton of ideas for choreography for routines that I plan to steal, um, I mean integrate :)

Mike (ICON) - Your poi tossing workshop was just what I needed! I feel like I really improved at them because of your excellent teaching. I hope I can incorporate them into my fire poi flow by PDF.

It is up to each of us to co-create a safe, supportive and empowering environment this weekend.
Leaving Portland Oregon at 1pm on Wednesday. (Meaning 2pm probably).

It's my first FireDrum Festival, but I love roadtrips and am a pretty energetic, animated chic who likes conversation and silence, both.

I think I have to do all the driving because I'm taking a rental car (which I already happened to have; long story) and I'm the only one covered on the policy.

Probably driving 9 hours the first day, stopping in Davis, CA, to crash at a friend's parent's house there (couches only though, due to several other folks crashing there too for same reason that night). We won't have to wake up super early on Thursday to make it to the festival that afternoon, since we'll already be more than halfway there.

NO RIDE BACK as I am staying in Santa Cruz a few extra days post-festival.

I might smoke a few cigarettes with my window open, but only after dark (not a big smoker but sometimes enjoy it while driving).
I don't like the smell of 420 so won't be having any of that going on in my car.

So we've gone a different direction and lost the DJ thing as you may have noticed last year. It was really awesome, that is until Saturday midnite, and the drummers who had been playin all weekend were burned out and stopped. We hope that we have more drummers and pace the drumming out this time and it won't be an issue.

So here's what we discussed with the drummers as a back up.

We get as many of you as possible to send us your suggestions for preferred music and put it on an iPod.

We have a couple of self powered speakers or small amplified system ready.

If the drummers get to a point that they need to take a break, the drummers helmsman just taps the play button on the iPod and we continue spinning.

When the drummers are rested and ready to resume, the drummers helmsman taps stop, and the drummers have at it again.

This way, the drummers are in control and there's no conflict or ambiguities about when someone stops or starts.

SOOOOOO, the lovely miss Erin (Luxotica) has offered to put a compilation together for us. All we need is for you to send her a list of your favs and we'll have this standing by.

But please know this, , we aren't bringing back the DJ thing. This is just as a back-up and is totally controlled by the drummers.

You can reply to this thread or you can send a message to;

Skill Level: Any, though I highly recommend taking Jenai's beginners class.

Equipment: Must bring own fans, preferably small enough for inside planes. I may have an extra set or two of mine, but they may be gone by class time. Also, bring something to drink, a way to dry your hands, and lots of energy!

We will have much to cover, but I will start from the beginning for those that missed the beginner lesson. We will examine each participants fans, particularly the handles, and discuss the grip and stopping points for each style. Once everyone is comfortable, we can have some fun.
At first we will focus on basic spinning in the 6 planes, the wrist movement needed for rapid direction changes, and simple arm movements. From there we will touch on basic forms, hand positions, weaves, and how to transition them to various spins and back.
Now that our shoulders are good and hurty, we will work on more intricate arm movements, poi-like patterning such as anti-spins and 1/2 flowers, turns / body movement, and later still... timing changes, 45's, 3-D fun, leads and follows, full flowers, finger switching, beat-matching moves to music, and more.

Greetings Fire Drums Tribe!

On Saturday at 3, I'll be teaching a double staff dance playshop in the Fiya Pit Ampitheater. This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced double staff student wanting to explore ways of dancing with a multitude of skills.

*We will warm up with a series of yoga postures, excersises, and movements to help strengthen and open the whole body for dance.

*A brief amount of theory on creating fire choreography, blocking and performance will be covered.

*Each dance movement will be broken down, explained, drilled and double staff manipulation/combo added.

*No dance experience is necessary, we will begin with basic movements and offer more intricate options for advanced dancers to expand skill, balance, and coordination.

*We will learn combos for solo, duet, trio, quad, pente and multi person dances

*A brief cooldown at the end of class to leave blissful relaxation and ready for the next spin thang!

Dance Styles/Concepts :

*Hip Hop
*Bellydance
*Modern
*Yoga
*Stick Fighting
*Kicks and Jumps
*Turns
*Levels
*Positive and Negative Space
*Even Walking!!!

Double Staff Trick/Concepts ; )

*Butterfly Flow
*Translations
*Thread the Needle
*Isolations
*Antispin 1/2 Antispin
*Trammels
*Tosses
*BTB (behind the back) OTH (over the head)
*Under knees and around arms
*Flowers
*Hybrids
*Inside Moves

All these movements need not be mastered, as we will go over each one (or as much as time allows!). The focus will be on adding dance to the double staff flow, so less time will be dedicated to drilling each of the double staff manipulations. Be prepared for a fun and challenging playshop that moves quickly.

*Notes will be emailed to participants that wish for them after fire drums!
