incidentally; rain or shine- with some steel cable, some good large tarps, some ratcheting straps, and (either my or rented) scaffolding, i am capable (and willing to organize) making a shelter in the back of the spinning area where the tarp fiasco happened this year. with the scaffolding it can be more than tall enough for dozens of people to spin under... circus tent/BM center camp style...

This is back tracking a bit. But I think Thursday Through Monday would be better. At least for people that are 9 to 5 like me, who can get Friday off at best. It would be nice to have Sunday be a fully loaded day, rather than have the extra day in the middle of the week.

i have to agree with Waldemar. Part of what makes this rock is the scarcity aspect and the pent up energy we go out there with to "burn off." a fall event is so quickly after the burn there's a large change (IMO) that people will be less inspired to go. i also think two is challenging for the organizers in a way that is perhaps unnecessary. It feels more special to have it be a once a year thing -- at least for me. i also think it selling out and people wanting in is a good thing, not a bad thing. i think that keeps it more alive. demand will remain high as long as supply is limited and that, i think, brings the most dedicated people out to the fire pit to play. If people were less interested (lower demand because of higher supply) i bet fewer people would have stayed through the rain.

Hot Springs... yes! I'd be incredibly supportive of a fire gathering at breitenbush (jonny and i are talking of going there this summer). The first fire drums at cutter was planned for the second weekend in may and i suggested against it due to WEF. It is the greenest festival that I have been to yet (have yet to attend sol fest) and would be sad as well to miss it. The following weekend is tribal fest as doozer mentioned. Whenever fire drums is I would choose to attend over most any other festival, however it was really charged to have the Flow Show, Fire Arts Expo and National Dance Week right before fire drums. It is a bit tricky. The fourth weekend is the Bobo links festival which i suppose I'm the least attached to in May, however we get into a drier season. I also adore having fire drums over Beltane and lighting of the bonfires.... The idea of another day (or even a whole week) would be incredible. Chad and I discussed the idea of having a portion of fire drums for a few days that would only be advanced classes. That could be another way to stretch out the experience.

ya know this twice a year thing could work out (i'm for it!) and in regards to location, i work at breitenbush hot springs and a couple of us have been talking about trying to do a FD type event up there. i need to talk to the event coordinator(who LOVES fire spinning) and the fire chief, but in regards to a beautiful location and amazing people, (you included of course!) it sounds like it would fit the bill quite nicely. lemme know what y'all think about such a thing. oh and it's in oregon, so not quite soCal. that last part is kinda fun to say aloud.

Dyamni, That is correct, WEF is typically the 2nd weekend in May. (I'd probably pick firedrums over it, if it came down to it). I know next weekend (the third in may) is tribalfest up north (a bellydance workshop/gathering type event) and a few other things. I'm not sure any weekends are ever going to be free of anything. I agree that the rain would have been nice to skip. Reminded me of that one at RWB...

I say the more often we get to be with each other the better. I don't think twice a year will take away from the impact of the event. Yes, but FD sold out this year and there was still a large demand for tickets even after they were sold. Wildfire is also very successful with both spring/summer and fall sessions. They sell out both very quickly.

Generally, that weekend is the last rain before November. By moving a week back, we probably reduce our odds of rain by 50%, but that's just some random number I made up. By moving back two weeks (which seems a bit problematical), you'd be almost guaranteed not to have rain.

As far as Wed vs. Mon, I figure there's as many folks that work on either of those days, but could be especially difficult for out-of-towners that are already taking days off the previous week for travel. As you know, i schedule the Expo the weekend before FD and we've been doing this for several years now. considering i offer travel stipends ($300 2 years ago, $1250 last year & $1000 this year to out of town folks), it's great to have the two weekends close together -- for everyone's benefit. the expo coincides with NDW which is the last week of april, so i could have the event the last weekend of NDW instead of the first weekend which means, ideally, the 2nd weekend of May would be FDVIII to maximize the potential of helping get some out of town artists to the area. If FD were the third weekend, that would be 2 weeks between the Expo and FD which I think would not be as easy to swing for some out of town folks, but that's a guess on my part.

I think the weekend of the 7th would conflict with Whole Earth Festival in Davis. That is usually the second weekend of May. Silence, correct me if I'm wrong.

There's so much more I want to say and many, many thanx to so many who helped us all make thru a bit of a 'trying' weekend dealing with Mother Nature. But for now, I'll stay with just this question about dates. I chose the first weekend in May as it doesn't conflict with many other events and festivals. But we've had to endure rain twice now so one or possibly 2 weekends later seems to be a better choice. I've asked this before but would like everyone's feedback about preferences and possible conflicting dates of other 'happenings'. Also, we've been considering making check in Wednesday so we can have a full day of workshops Thursday. 2010 weekend choices are; May 5 thru 9 May 12 thru 16
