I have discussed with Sky the idea of having a sweat lodge this year at FireDrums. Please let me know if you have experience building a lodge. I have attended two Lokota Tribe sweats in Gila, New Mexico, but have never built one. Please feel free to join this conversation even if you don't have experience building, but would like to have a sweat lodge this year.

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 11:36 AMI would love to have a sweat lodge. . . i think the only problem is that there are going to be lots and lots of people, and having a sweat is usually a smaller thing (i've never heard of a sweat with more than 30, and that's fucking huge by my standards) though granted I'm no expert or anything.
You'd have to have a large fire going to get those rocks going from early in the day. . . maybe have people take shifts caring for the rocks so that everyone can go out and enjoy the workshops. . . or even if you want to be a part of the sweat, you need to put in some time caring for the fire and prepping the lodge. . . what you put in is what you get out.
as for building it. . .it's not that difficult. you've got a few options. . . from the way that i've done it before, i'd say the first step is to dig a 2 or so foot deep circle for people to sit in. From there you build the frame, which can be spherical, done like a tepee, whatever, and lastly cover it up in blankets with a blue tarp somewhere in there to keep all the moisture inside.
are you thinking more of a sweat experience (a longer time 30 min-120 min or something) or a sauna (which is generally shorter i think) ?
take all this advice with a grain of salt, as while i've built a lodge or two and participated in a bunch, i am by no means an expert. . .check out these links though, they seem pretty good www.welcomehome.org/rob/sweat/sweat.html and www.think-aboutit.com/native/...odge.htm
lastly. . . this would be great! would love to be involved in this at fire drums. . . get all hot and sweaty, then go jump in the lake afterwards! -

Wed, March 25, 2009 - 12:06 PMumm, I am gonna say probably a no go on the lodge and your not allowed to go into the lake ;)
Sorry to be a buzzkill. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 2:50 PMno go on building a sweat lodge??? I guess when Sky and I discussed he thought it was possible. Well let me know if anything changes. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 4:18 PMI would personally love to do a sweat at FireDrums. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 4:46 PMIMHO a sweat lodge isn't going to be feasible.
Besides the idea that doing a sweat is usually something intimate in the nature of a personal experience within a [small] group of people.
You're talking about several hundred people at FD. And if you do something that leaves a bunch of people out that may wish to participate that is going to be defeating the purpose.
Besides I don't know if digging a large hole and gathering branches and so forth is legal on such a site. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 5:11 PMThe sweat lodges I have gone to did not have a hole dug into the ground. Just blankets on the ground. Also I thought gathering the branches before hand would be the way to go. When Sky and I were discussing we talked about having a committee of sorts who would bring in the materials and build it together. I think maybe 15 people max in each session which would last for quite some time. The sweats I did were four hours. I think that would be too long for this event.
It would have to be set up like a workshop, with different leaders for a number of sessions over two days.
But Noel mentioned that he doesn't think it is possible...so Que Sera, Sera -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 10:00 PMIt sounds like a great idea in theory... but the fact that there are sooooo many people does have some limits.
No swimming in the lake... but what of the swimming pool??? Sky? -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 12:50 PMI was thinking of the swimming pool as well. I'm guessing that no lifeguard means no swimming; liability issues. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 3:11 PMHow can anyone even think of swimming? Last year I was so cold that even my bones were cold. (Hence the Sweat Lodge idea) -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 5:32 PMswimming in the pool is a possibility, what does everyone else think?
two years ago we hired some lifeguards and not very many people went to the pool....it is quite cold out but sometimes can be nice...but theres workshops!! -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 6:07 PMOur first gathering at Cutters we hired lifeguards and payed to have them heat the pool and Mike hauled his sound system up and set it up and no one had time or interest. So we dropped the idea. It's only desirable for about 2 hours at mid day when everyone's busy with workshops. I've been to soirees there in summer when the days are longer and warmer and it was nice. There were DJs and about 200 people partying it up and it was way fun.
BUT, we have plenty of other things that we're all there for and it would only be a distraction and really not worth it.
I've always asked for everyones opinions and try to listen to what people want. So IF enough people want it, we could make it happen.
BUT, with the above considerations and from my experience, my feeling is that it's really not a good idea. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 9:32 PMIt may be a bit warmer this year.... that whole global warming thing that we are doing our part in. I think the pool idea could be amazing (heated pool fk yeah!) I've been to some of the summer gathering at Cutters and the pool party was INCREDIBLE!!!
Is it possible to have the pools open on just a couple days? or during certain times (middle of the day?) My brain fried from the sun and overload of workshops last year, and a quick dip in the pool could be as good as mate' to keep going (and FUN). My vote would include watering the fire dancers. DJ's??? I'm there!! Imagine a massage table set up... oh man... Fire Drums Retreat in the Redwoods. Pure bliss. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 9:37 PMThere is an area just outside the fence and I remember hooping it up there during the Raindance pool party (Edit on the tables... Good times.
I don't think it would be a real distraction from spinning, just a potential relief from the heat if it does blaze. (I had to re-apply sunblock and wear a hat last year in the heat of the day... and yes the nights and mornings can be wicked cold.) As long as people are aware the pool is available for use I think people will jump in. Yeah? -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 11:50 PMRaindance was the soiree I was referring to below, and yes, it was awesome. A DJ and 200 people playin and partying in the hot summer sun. BUT as I mentioned, at the time we'll be there it's still cold so we'd have to pay to have them heat the pool (about $600) and hire life guards, ($300 more). Also one of the organizers would be required to be there at all times. As much as I wanted to make this happen, it's just too much for the very limited time we have there and most people are too occupied with workshops all day anyway. So , , sorry guyz!!!!!! -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 3:37 PMAlas... I had no idea the pool was open the first fire drums @ Cutters. Oh well. Too true, will be busy workshopping most of the day.
Less than a month away?? yeeeeah! -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 1:34 AMI am for both pool and sweat.
Two years ago it was hot and we enjoyed the pool.
people volunteered for lifeguards.
as far as a sweat lodge goes it can be low impact and no problem.
real easy to do and would be a big hit at night
I will help if it ever comes together.

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 11:44 AMwould the people building the lodge, fire keepers, and water pourer have any linage to this way of life? if not, i would look into finding someone first. this ceremony is sacred and should be honored properly with respect to the elders. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 6:04 PM"...this ceremony is sacred and should be honored properly with respect to the elders."
With ya on that, man. Not saying that it necessarily needs to be a native-born son or daughter, but like any workshop/seminar, having serious experience in the art should be a prerequisite to guide or teach - not just a group of well-meaning hippies having seen it done once and thinking it would be, like, totally cool 'n stuff. Had a DMT experience on the playa several years back "guided" by someone who (I found out later) had tried it themselves only once and decided that was all the experience they needed to go ahead and play at shaman with a bunch of first-timers.
Of course, seeing as how the sweatlodge isn't happening anyhow, the point is moot. ;) -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 7:12 PMHow did that experience end up for you? Did you notice during the experience that something was off? -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 11:06 PMBeen thinking a lot about this and how perfect it would be.
Just don't know where at the camp we could create a sweat lodge.
But if we were to find someone with the afore mentioned knowledge and ", , experience in the art , ,"
I'd consider trying to help make it happen. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 11:11 PMThis would be wonderful, Sky.
What a perfect day it would be- learning amazing new stuff during the day, walking on fire and then finishing the day with a good sweat. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 9:06 AMI really would like to see this happen, but we must also be realistic about what can be pulled together. An available area is the first thing to work out, and until we get there and scout out the camp, I don't know where that would be. We also need someone who truly knows how to orchestrate this. We're all gonna be very busy and I've found that, at least for myself, I always want and try to do more than I have available time, material and energy. If this is gonna happen, it will be you guys pulling it off, so consider your time and resources, and of course, we still need to find someone of the experience and mind set willing to help guide the process. Not saying this to discourage, but to be realistic about our expectations. I'm fully with you all that it would be a great idea, but I and the other organizers are 'a bit busy' so it's up to you guys to do the homework and organize this. -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:47 AMHey, Sky, I just had this really cool idea that maybe we could do that involves building a whole sacred geometry structure out of really rare UV-reactive bamboo found only in the deepest part of Borneo...I saw it on a cartoon once and I think it could work. We'd have to charter helicopters and hire guides, but you're not too busy to organize it for me if I sketch out the basic idea on a napkin, are you...? I mean, you don't have anything pressing and immediate on your plate at the moment, right?? I'd really like to just walk in to FD and have it all done by the time I get there so's I can spend my time tripping balls and skipping the light fantastic....(borrowing Scorch's infamous "evil grin") ;) -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 3:05 PMIf we just change the semantics we can make this possible....How about: Meditation through Sweat Hut. It will be a new ceramony specifically tailored to the Firedrum community. The tradition will be passed down through the ages. One day 200 years from now a spiritual seeker will be initiated into the ancient Firedrum tribe ceremony of Meditation through Sweat Hut. (After hours of reading about the Visionary Village situation...I thought that maybe coming up with our own ritual might go over better)

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:41 PMHave any of you talked to Peace Man? He built the one at LIB last year. It was awesome. It was a sauna though.
I've been talking to Bianca, who has organized sweats in the past. A sweat lodge with ceremony is pretty infeasible for Fire Drums. The ceremony would take over an hour, and no more than a dozen or so people could participate at a time. Too exclusive, and we're not about to do 15 straight sweats so that everyone can participate.
A sauna, though, would be sweeeeet. Still, it would need to be maintained, and I can't think of anyone who's willing to devote him or herself to keeping the fires burning. Did you already have volunteers Dragonfly? -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 10:42 AMSince it was stated at the start that this wasn't possible I didn't try to get any volunteers. At this point I am ready to turn my tent into a sauna. I figure I can get the rocks that are used for stone massages and boil a ton of them then bring them into my tent in something that won't burn the floor of my tent. (I haven't quite figured out the logistics)
I am on a serious mission to stay warm this year. For at least two months I have been seriously dreading being as cold as I was last year. I might have to go to therapy to get through this. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 3:25 PMBeen thinking about this a lot and really wanted to see it happen. I've just been talking with others about it and sadly, we are limited by the insurance and there are just too many additional things that can't be worked out at this time. But we'll have plenty of fires to help keep everyone warm and a lot of friends and warm bodies to cuddle up to as well.
As for the pool, and swimming in the lake, that too isn't going to happen. Volunteer life guards don't cut it. It is required that California State certified life guards be on duty and also one of the organizers must be there as well and we just don't have the available time to be dealing with all this.
Sorry everyone for not thinking this thru earlier but I'm thinkin we'll have plenty to keep us both busy and warm. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 3:29 PMand don't forget the clothing optional sauna in my tent. -
-
Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 11:06 PMGIRL, bein in a tent with you "sans clothing" would be a sauna even if it were the middle of the arctic! ;)
Tetro, you one lucky duuuude!!!!!! -

Re: Sweat Lodge @ FireDrums
Wed, April 15, 2009 - 4:02 PMWell count me in to help turn this into an event in itself.
So far I have a lot of time to devote to making it happen.
I too have an awareness of how to put together a SAFE sauna.
With all the redwood limbs that just fell from this last wind storm
we could make a structure/dome near a fire ring.
I will bring wood and holy volcano rocks to heat up.
Clear at the end of camping spots is a good place.
I camped there two years ago.
Quiet except for the drumming in the distance.
I will also camp close and help maintain it.
Bummer about the pool. How high is that fence around it Sky.
We may be dealing with some hot weather in the day time.
