Hey folks. I am teaching the intro-intermediate staff class Fri morning at 9:45. I am expecting somewhere between 60-90 students, which is way to many for one teacher. I am also preparing for at least three major differences in levels. So I am asking for help. I want to be ready to have three different groups going simultaneously; intro traditional staff, intro contact, intermediate contact. If you feel like you can lead any two of these (not at the same time), and wouldn't mind helping me teach, then please send me an email at chad at freedomthrufire.com . I have a general syllabus for each of these, but you would be welcome to teach what you are familiar with. We also may be teaching 80 people all intro to traditional staff or intro to contact. It will depend entirely on who shows and what level they are at. Either way, I will need help with this many folks.
Thanks in advance and I can't wait to see everyone in two weeks.

Re: staff teachers needed
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 8:19 AMIf you are assigned as a teacher, you can login to "your info" and there will be a menu item on the bottom left like "classes teaching". Click on that and you will be able to see every class you are teaching, the email addresses of the people signed up, and be able to change the description and pre-reqs for the class. At the top of each class it says something like "15 out of 85 people that have signed up for classes are going to this". That means of the 85 people who have shared with us what classes they are most likely going to attend, 15 have signed up for yours. I am assuming 400 people out of the 500 attending FD will be attending classes at any one point, and extrapolate how many are probably going to be in a class.
Hope that helps,
Chad -

Re: staff teachers needed
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 11:30 AMI'd be happy to do a variation on the class I taught last year if you need me to, but I specifically didn't apply as an instructor this year so as to allow other people an opportunity to share...
I'd take a class by lily any day! -

Re: staff teachers needed
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 11:33 AMOh, but if you needed me to do it my class was intermediate "Plateau Busters" for staff. Basically, a variety of different techniques that can open up whole new categories of moves for people that have painted themselves into a corner with focusing on one type of movement or another. Lots of martial arts, combat, contact, and improvisation.
But that being said, I'd rather take a class by lily. ;) -

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 3:01 AMI think what Chad is saying is that we need assistant instructors for some of the larger classes. This would require the lead and assistant getting together prior to the class and discussion how that lead instructor facilitates their class so the assistant would be able to best help with people who might be needing a little closer attention at times.

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 7:43 AMI will come along and impress upon your students the ABSOLUTE NESSESSITY of doing EIGHT HOURS of practise EACH DAY.
NO EXCEPTIONS. -

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 8:07 AMOnly 8 hours? Seems kinda lazy to me. Are you taking breaks to sleep at night?

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 9:58 AMWhat? You guys haven't started bending time and space to get more practice time in? I've almost progressed to the ninth dimension already. Everything's all sparkly prismatic there. -

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 10:00 AMI can bend space...not time. Is there a tutorial for that on youtube? -

Re: staff teachers needed
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 11:27 AMThread jacking is so easy to do.... please stop and go get your EIGHT HOURS of practice in. Less talk... more spinning.
Meg, I would love your amazing assistance with this. Lily, your blog says you aren't going. Don't drama on me. If you are in, let me know, I would love to have your assistance. Can I please get both of your emails (send note to chad@freedomthrufire.com). We can coordinate what we want to cover. I could really use a traditional staff spinner help as well.
There are a lot of classes that are probably going to have over 80 people in them. I personally think is is very difficult to teach a class effectively with over 30 students(depending on the tool and material being covered). I could use an assistant or two in my intro to poi class as well, if anyone wanted to lend a teaching hand there.
In my opinion how people handle teaching so many students is really up to the main instructor. In this staff class, I would be happy to let the person taking the intermediate contact group know what I was going to cover, have them tell me what they normally teach, and just say, yeah, teach your normal class, it rocks. Or could you just add this one foot work / movement based move to your normal stuff. But every teacher is different. -

Re: staff teachers needed
Sun, April 19, 2009 - 3:28 AMI can teach the style of traditional staff spinning I learned from Keith Barefoot. It is mostly based on fundamentals around freedom of movement, and incorporation with dance elements.
That being said, I would rather learn from Nick.. -

Re: staff teachers needed
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 11:42 AMDarn! It's the same time as the Martial Arts classes taught by that Magnificent Bastard Howard Chen, Loki, and Yours Truly...otherwise I'd volunteer for it.
And I wholeheartedly second Megan's truism that practicing eight hours a day is essential - it's how my kung fu teacher used to teach. 'Cept we practiced at night instead of day. Quieter. -

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 1:38 AMGood news for me, miracle did happen, I'm up a couple grand for the week which means I can go.
Bad news "Darn ! It's the same time as the Martial Arts classes taught by that Magnificent Bastard Howard Chen, Loki, and Yours Truly...otherwise I'd volunteer for it. "
That's the class I was really looking forward to attending. Curse ye, God of Irony!
